In 2020, Abbey Road Studios launched its first Scholarship Programme. A new scheme offering two fully funded places on our Advanced Diploma in Music Production and Sound Engineering to students from underrepresented groups.
The Diversity Scholarship aims to deliver equal opportunities to underrepresented creatives who show drive, potential and talent to succeed in the music industry. “Successful scholarship applicants are motivated and driven individuals eager to immerse themselves in the course and strive to be the best they can,” expresses Abbey Road Institute Campus and Admissions Manager Darren Suckling.
This year, we celebrate its fourth year with Scholarship recipients Onkar Riyat and Jasmine Wilson. Joining us on the June 24 class of our Music Production course, we’re excited to share exclusive interviews with both students who have since spoken to us about what it means to them to be on the course and their experiences so far.
“My purpose in this world is to create, so being on this course means I get to live that dream of expressing myself through art,” says Onkar Riyat. “Abbey Road Studio’s Diversity Scholarship gives me a platform to cultivate and grow that vision. This is something I will forever be grateful for.”
At Abbey Road Insitute, we believe representation through equal opportunities is important. This is why we encourage underrepresented groups to apply to the Diversity Scholarship scheme.
“Diversity is the cornerstone of creativity and innovation.”
Abbey Road Studios, Managing Director, Sally Davies
“By offering a diversity scholarship for our music production course, we aim to open doors for talented individuals from all backgrounds,” says Sally. “Ensuring that their unique voices and perspectives can contribute to the future of the music industry. The scholarship embodies our commitment to fostering an inclusive community. Every student has the opportunity to thrive and achieve their full potential.”
The core purpose of the Diversity Scholarship is to counteract the barriers held against underrepresented groups within society.
“Having a varied mix of students from different backgrounds and cultures at Abbey Road Institute enhances the learning environment for everyone,” Darren emphasises.
Being on our Music Production course has been a positive experience for Jasmine. “When I received the news that I got the scholarship, I was so happy but mainly so grateful to the Institute and Abbey Road Studios for providing me with this amazing opportunity,” she says.
Now a full term into the course, Onkar expresses that studying here “has been a life-changing experience.” “My musical skills and knowledge have drastically improved in just one term. The lecturers and staff have been incredibly supportive. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed meeting and collaborating with others on the course,” he adds.
For Jasmine, her time on our course has been relatively similar. “My experience has been amazing so far,” she adds. “I’ve learnt so many tips about mixing that I wouldn’t have anywhere else. I’ve also been able to connect and share music with people from all around the world.”
