Meet Student Administrator Lucy Garcia

Whether she’s in our studio leading a tour for prospective students or in the classroom providing current students support, Lucy Garcia can be found anywhere and everywhere at Abbey Road Institute.  Lucy joins us fresh from an apprenticeship at Universal Music UK and brings a lifelong love of music and performing. Get to know her better in our interview below:

Welcome to the team Lucy Garcia. Tell us about your background in music and what brought you to Abbey Road Institute?

I was a very dramatic child! I was always in the school play and wanted to sing and perform. I had a YouTube channel and everything. I wanted to be Taylor Swift. I then went to music college when I was 16 and started writing songs and performing and got to play Latitude Festival. I really wanted a job in the music industry so I applied for a Universal apprenticeship in international licensing. I worked on global compilations and greatest hits. I finished the apprenticeship and wanted to work somewhere supporting producers and musicians and found the role at Abbey Road Institute. I wanted to be where the music is being created.

What does your role involve as Student Administrator?

I serve as the first point of contact for current and prospective students. I support the students with various needs throughout their year on the Advanced Diploma course. I also show prospective students the facilities and help them navigate through the application process.

What are your first impressions of the job so far?

Abbey Road is just as amazing as I thought it would be. It is more homely here! It’s been really inspiring to hear all the students’ music and all that is being created here. For the future I’d like to strengthen the relationship with the students and be someone they can rely on.

You headed Universal’s first Pride event. Tell us about what it was like to launch the event?

I really wanted to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community in the creative industries. Luckily there is so much personal freedom to be who you are in this industry. I joined the LGBTQ+ committee and focused on the charity aspect working with the Albert Kennedy Trust. We thought it would be great to do an event for Universal staff to support the charity. I ended up hosting the event which was really exciting. We invited activist Monroe Bergdorf who I interviewed. It was a really great event I look forward to continuing it at Abbey Road Institute.

Desert Island Discs?

I would bring ‘Rumours’ by Fleetwood Mac with me for sure. It has always been my favourite album. My mum loves Fleetwood Mac and there are so many bangers on that album!. London Grammar’s ‘Truth Is A Beautiful Thing’ would be another choice. That was the first album where I understood the type of music I wanted to make. Hannah Reed’s voice is incredible. Lastly, I would bring ‘Trick’ by Jamie T. It’s a fantastic album. I saw him live and it was an incredible gig so it always brings back good memories of that time.
