Alex Watson
Alex Watson joins the Abbey Road Institute team to head up our technical services team as Technical Services Manager in our new home Angel Recording Studios.
Alex comes from a musical background having played in orchestras, brass bands and big bands and sang in choirs as well as working on and off stage in theatres during his teens. He always knew he wanted to progress in this area and then discovered the Music and Sound Recording (Tonmeister) degree at the University of Surrey, which led him to a career in recording studios.
Alex was a key member of the team at Angel Studios prior to its closure in 2019. Some of his personal highlights from this previous time include working on popular TV dramas, the variety of talented people he met from all departments and learning new skills from them. Particular highlights include working on the pre-records for the film Into the Woods with the likes of Meryl Streep, Anna Kendrick, and Chris Pine, plus the big band Christmas album with Kylie. Alongside his day job, Alex has also been composing for production music companies since 2012, which has meant getting his piano skills back up to scratch.
Alex’s role involves overseeing all the technical installations for the building; from keeping the teaching rooms up to standard to maintaining the larger room for commercial orchestral sessions. He brings with him a wealth of experience as well as knowledge and insight from his time at Angel and says of the reopening ‘It was a huge part of the industry for 40 years. To be able to re-open and offer that space again to the London scene is a huge boost for everyone in the industry.’
