WHAT TO EXPECT

Over the two days, you will gain exclusive access into the world of recording drums, led by two of the industry’s top professionals in their respective fields, producer and mix engineer Haydn Bendall (Gary Moore, Tina Turner, Pet Shop Boys) and drummer Ralph Salmins (Van Morrison, Robbie Williams, The Beach Boys).

During the masterclass, Haydn and Ralph will cover a lot of ground to help you learn how to record drums like a pro. Here are some of the topics that they will cover:

Choice of kit. What defines those choices?
Tuning choices
Muffling options
Deciding on what/how to play for the correct stylistic approach
Clicks. The thinking behind the use of clicks or not
Timing. How to sit “in the groove”. Whether (and how) to play ahead or behind
How to develop an internal reference for time
Groove. Balances between the bass drum, snare and hi hat
Preparing for ensemble situations
The choices available to choose from which create a particular sound or atmosphere. Kit placement
Choice of microphones for particular recordings and why. Mic characteristics, Mic positioning, Phase

Ambience and space. How to capture or create it. How and why to open or close down an acoustic
Developing a real finesse and harmony between playing, sound, balance and perspective
